New initiative aims to make the transition from pupil to pulpit easier for Brittany McDonald-Null

COLUMBIA, Mo.— When embarking on a chosen career, the early months and years can be a whirlwind of chaos. The pressures to succeed, to fit in and to establish your own voice can take a toll. Imagine how daunting it must be for seminary graduates to begin vocational ministry, often in an unfamiliar town and in front of an unfamiliar congregation. Burnout is common, as roughly 40 percent of pastors quit ministry within the first five years.

To combat this trend, churches nationwide are beginning to consider pastoral residencies. The Serving Team at First Baptist Church in Columbia began exploring the idea of such a program in February 2015. After two years of planning and securing the necessary funding, First Baptist Church invited recent seminary graduates to apply for a two-year pastoral residency. An intensive and exhaustive interview process led them to Brittany McDonald-Null, whom the church will help transition into her pastoral career.

Brittany will be immersed in the full experience of pastoral life and practical ministry at First Baptist Church. Having spent the past eight years in the arid expanse of west Texas—she graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene in May 2017 with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a Master’s in Divinity—Brittany is enjoying the shift in scenery.

“Coming from a place where there aren’t really any trees or grass, this has been a wonderful change,” Brittany said. “First Baptist Church has been an incredibly welcoming family, and I love how I’ve already witnessed people coming together to worship ecumenically. To see children serving and women serving… it’s just not a context that I’m used to. It’s great to see equality actually represented in this church, much like the Gospels teach us.”

The plan is to give Brittany support, guidance and on-the-job experience as she learns to be a pastor. Up to 96 percent of ministers who go through a pastoral residency stay in ministry.

“I have had the good fortune of having good mentors,” says First Baptist Church pastor Carol McEntyre. “While I did not participate in a pastoral residency, I had the benefit of serving in large churches early in my ministry that had seasoned members on staff who served as mentors. These relationships were informal, but the knowledge, advice, emotional support and modeling they shared with me was transformative.”

In October 2016, First Baptist Church received an award of $25,000 from Indianapolis-based Pastoral Excellency Network to supplement their own financial investment in the pastoral residency program. It is First Baptist Church’s goal to raise funds to eventually endow the program and make a lasting impact over time.

“By mentoring young pastors, we have a chance to keep great leaders in the church,” McEntyre says. “What an incredible way to serve God by shaping those who will lead God’s church for years to come.”

Founded in 1823, First Baptist Church is a historic, vibrant community of faith located in the heart of downtown Columbia. Carol McEntyre has served as Pastor since 2012.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Columbia LandCare LLC continues to grow forward.

Mid-Missouri’s premier commercial landscape design, maintenance and installation company had already acquired or merged with four other businesses in five years before Creative Surroundings Inc. caught and held its attention. A phone call in May 2016 led to a September handshake. Columbia LandCare officially acquired Creative Surroundings and absorbed all of its full-time staff on Dec. 30, 2016.

“Our interest in Creative Surroundings was really three-fold,” Columbia LandCare owner Jed Taylor said of the 34-year-old company just acquired. “One, their horticulture expertise with regards to annual flowers and overall plant care is second-to-none in the industry. Two, we wanted the remarkable staff at Creative Surroundings to join our team. And finally, Creative Surroundings had great clients and it was apparent they put a lot of value in maintaining long-term relationships. It was too good to pass up.”

The acquisition was made possible when Creative Surroundings owner Gloria Gaus expressed interest in retiring. Gaus will remain on board for 2017 as the transition takes place, and all other full-time staff have begun working at Columbia LandCare’s headquarters, located at 7105 Henderson Road. This move adds to Columbia LandCare’s fluctuating roster of approximately 100 staff members.
Columbia LandCare has roots in mid-Missouri that trace back more than 20 years, when it was founded as Columbia Turf. Jed Taylor became majority owner in 2012, three years after his company Missouri Mowing merged with Columbia Turf. Columbia LandCare provides year-round landscape maintenance services, including snow removal, mowing, irrigation, floriculture, landscape design and installation.

Local enterprise plans series of events to celebrate three decades and counting

COLUMBIA, Mo.—Thirty years ago, job searches were conducted on foot. Hands were shaken. Envelopes stuffed with resumes and references were handed over. Not so much anymore. Although the ways we find work have changed dramatically, one local company in particular has been able to constantly adapt to the shifting climate and help mid-Missourians establish rewarding careers.

This month, Columbia-based JobFinders Employment Services turns 30 years old. To commemorate, the company has events planned at its three central Missouri locations (Columbia, Jefferson City and Mexico) and will unveil a newly design website in conjunction with the anniversary.

“It’s a milestone we’re proud of because it speaks to the countless people who have contributed to making JobFinders a success over the years,” owner Anne Williams says. “To be able to help so many people find and establish rewarding careers—and so many businesses fill their open positions with quality candidates—has been a thrill. We look forward to many more years.”

LOCAL ASSOCIATE PASTOR LENDS VOICE TO NEW YOUTH MINISTRY BOOK

COLUMBIA—Michael McEntyre, the associate pastor of youth, college and missions at First Baptist Church, is no stranger to citing chapter and verse. Now, he can cite a chapter of his own.

McEntyre contributed a chapter to a book titled “Adoptive Youth Ministry” by Chap Clark, who is considered one of the leading voices in youth ministry. The book was released in January 2016 by Baker Publishing Group.

McEntyre provides his expertise to a chapter titled “Thinking (Practical) Theology.” In his continuing pursuit of a doctorate degree in Youth, Family, and Culture from Fuller Theological Seminary, Clark (a professor and department chair at Fuller) served as the mentor for a group of students that included McEntyre. After working together on a separate project about Practical Theology, Clark invited his protégé to write a chapter for “Adoptive Youth Ministry.”

Reaching youth has always been McEntyre’s focus. Several years ago, he says he plateaued in regard to his youth ministry work. McEntyre sought more education through Fuller Seminary, where he says he’s come to a new understanding of ministry.

“I knew there was more I needed to be doing with my students, I just didn’t know how,” McEntyre says. “Through my work at Fuller I began to understand that a framework of Practical Theology helped me to be more Kingdom-focused yet remain culturally aware of the lives of my students. The chapter in the book is about that realization and the benefits it can bring to ministry.”

“Adoptive Youth Ministry” is available now at Amazon (suggested retail price $34.99).

Founded in 1823, First Baptist Church is a historic, vibrant community of faith located in the heart of downtown Columbia. Michael’s wife, Carol McEntyre, has served as Senior Pastor since 2012. Visit First Baptist Church online at fbc-columbia.org or call 573-449-1149.

COLUMBIA, Mo.—The holiday season can be a stark reminder of what’s missing in the lives of Columbia’s neediest children. One local business is doing its part to make sure that dozens of well-deserving Boone County kids want for nothing, if only for one day.

Sixty children ages 4-8 will experience the generosity of the Christmas spirit beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17. The local Massage Envy franchise, owned by Pat and Becky Quinn, has coordinated efforts to gather the kids at Toys R Us, 1901 Bernadette Drive, where each child will be given a $50 gift card and paired with a volunteer to help purchase holiday gifts for themselves. After that, the group will travel by bus to Going Bonkers, 3812 Buttonwood Drive, for complimentary lunch and an afternoon of play.

Rock Bridge High School home-school communicator Joe Collier helped Massage Envy identify the Columbia Public School District’s most at-need kids. He also helped manage last year’s event, which benefited 30 kids. An advocate for kids in social need, Collier says one of the amazing things about last year was that so many kids chose to also get gifts for family and friends.

“This is such a genuine experience,” he says. “Last year, it accomplished exactly what it set out to accomplish. It’s all about helping kids in need. It was really pure, just fantastic.”

INTERFAITH EFFORT RAISES MONEY, AWARENESS FOR WARM CAUSE

COLUMBIA, Mo.—First Baptist Church of Columbia will host a fundraising event beginning Sunday, Sept. 27 to benefit Room at the Inn, a community-based effort to provide shelter and blankets for those in need during extremely cold winter nights.

“Night Under the Stars” is geared toward youth and college students; its purpose is to expose the effects of poverty and homelessness in our community. Students have the opportunity to eat dinner at a mock soup kitchen, learn from people who were formerly homeless and sleep in a simulated shelter.

Now in its seventh year, Room at the Inn is an interfaith initiative that grants a warm night’s stay to those in Columbia who have nowhere else to turn. Two years ago, First Baptist Church Youth Pastor Michael McEntyre learned that teenagers who wanted an opportunity to help out at Room at the Inn were unable to do so; you have to be 18 years old to serve. McEntyre wanted to get youth involved and engaged, and “Night Under the Stars” was born. In 2014, the event raised $1,000 for Room at the Inn.

The event starts at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 and runs through 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28 at First Baptist Church, 1112 E. Broadway. Participants will travel to various locations within walking distance of the church as part of the experience.

Founded in 1823, First Baptist Church is a historic, vibrant community of faith located in the heart of downtown Columbia. Carol McEntyre has served as Pastor since 2012. Visit First Baptist Church online at fbc-columbia.org or call 573-449-1149.
